Going bust ... insolvencies in the construction sector are rising across Australia. 

In Victoria, any kitchen, bathroom or laundry renovation over $10,000 is classed as building work, which means it must be carried out by a Registered Building Practitioner  - now regulated by the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC). And a domestic building contract must be signed.

For projects over $16,000, your builder must also provide Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) before work begins.

But here’s the problem:

Below is a clear summary of what Victorian law requires, and how you can confirm your renovation is fully protected.

What The Law Says In Victoria:

1. Your renovator must be a Registered Building Practitioner

Under Victorian legislation, any kitchen, bathroom or laundry renovation valued at more than $10,000 is considered building work.

That means it must be carried out by a Registered Building Practitioner - regulated by the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC).

If someone is not registered, they are not legally permitted to perform this level of work.

Why This Matters:

If the builder is unregistered:

> Your project has no legal protection
> You cannot access insurance if something goes wrong
> The work may not comply with building regulations
> You may face difficulties when selling your home

How to check registration:

You can verify any builder’s registration on the BPC Register. All you need is their business name or practitioner number.

2. You must receive a Domestic Building Contract (DBC) and Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) before work begins

For renovation work exceeding $10,000, a Domestic Building Contract is legally required.

For any project over $16,000, the builder must also obtain Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) on your behalf - and provide you with a Certificate of Insurance before work starts.

This is a legal requirement. There are no exceptions.

A registered builder must give you a DBC and obtain DBI before:
