Relaxed and elegant, Hamptons style is inspired by a breathtakingly beautiful area near New York that’s a getaway for the rich and famous.
Hamptons kitchen designs in Melbourne truly reflect their renowned coastal namesake, and work just as well here on the other side of the word. They are the epitome of classic yet casual; bringing a wonderfully laid-back feel to a style that exudes refinement and sophistication.
The good news is that you don’t have to live by the water to incorporate this enduring and popular style in your home.
SPACE
Space and light are key elements of a Hamptons style kitchen.
Think open spaces, with high ceilings that allow room for decorative mouldings around the cabinetry, and bright natural light streaming through large windows.
COLOUR
Given this aesthetic, it’s hardly surprising that white is often the colour of choice.
Other pale neutral colours are also popular, such as sandy tones that reinforce the coastal theme.
For added colour, choose shades of blue and green – everything from duck egg blue through to navy or aqua and soft sea greens work superbly.
LIGHTING
Large or oversized pendant lights continue the emphasis on light and suit high ceilings that are typical of the style.
CABINETRY
Simple white cabinetry is another Hamptons kitchen hallmark.
Traditional shaker-style cabinets, comprising a simple flat centre piece with a frame around the edges, are always popular. Shell inspired handles or small dark knobs are fabulous hardware choices.
ISLANDS AND BENCHTOPS
Islands in Hamptons kitchens are ubiquitous. They provide extra bench and storage space, and an area for relaxed, casual stool seating.
You often see traditional decorative features on the island such as panelled cabinetry and corbels.
Stone benchtops work wonderfully well for this style. Marble is the classic, timeless choice, and reconstituted stone splashbacks such as Caesarstone are also a great option.
SPLASHBACKS
For splashbacks, ceramic tiles are a natural choice given the emphasis on traditional features.
White subway tiles look particularly at home in a Hamptons kitchen.
FLOORING
Wooden floorboards suit the style best; either dark or white washed.
As you can see, Hamptons kitchens share many features with French Provincial style of architecture, and many kitchens take design inspiration from both.
Other natural materials such as linen fabrics, cane, coir, glass and wood also feature.
Cane stools, often painted white, are a popular seating option for the kitchen islands.
These days, the coastal element of the style tends to be quite understated – more “chic” than “beach”, but decorative items that evoke the coastal feel also add character while keeping within the Hamptons style’s parameters.

We’re thrilled with how the kitchen renovation has turned out. It’s gone from the darkest to the lightest room in the house. It looks so beautiful and I just love it.
I just love this kitchen. It’s worked out perfectly. We had a builder working on the rest of the house and he couldn’t believe how well the kitchen was made and put in, and the after sales service from Rosemount was fantastic.
We have referred loads of people to Rosemount. They weren’t the cheapest company but for me it’s about the quality of the product. You get what you pay for.
The quality of the build cannot be faulted and the level of service we have experienced from Rosemount has been exceptionally good. Everyone we spoke to over the phone and those that visited our house were a delight to deal with.
Rosemount’s service was outstanding from start to finish. We love our new kitchen and couldn’t be happier with the experience we had. I would highly recommend Rosemount without hesitation.
Rosemount were by far the best of the trades we dealt with in our whole renovation, and continue to be. And we had a great kitchen designer who was clearly excited about doing something a bit different and edgier. He really brought some of my ideas in the kitchen to life.
People love the kitchen, and are blown away with the transformation. And for me it’s not just beautiful, every part is so functional.
Everyone within the company is fantastic, from the reps to the managers/owners to the tradesmen. We couldn’t have asked for a better team to look after this build.
